It has been just over a year since the Maltby Army Cadet detachment officially opened its doors, and the unit is already surpassing expectations. What began as a new opportunity for local young people has quickly developed into a thriving part of the community. The detachment is now proudly parading more than 46 disciplined and enthusiastic cadets.
The appeal of the detachment has extended well beyond Maltby itself, attracting young people from across the surrounding area. Cadets now attend from Maltby, Wickersley, Dinnington and Thurcroft, creating a diverse group of teenagers from different schools and backgrounds who come together to learn leadership, teamwork and resilience.
The past 12 months have already provided many memorable opportunities for members. Alongside regular training nights, cadets have taken part in annual camps where they have put their fieldcraft and survival skills to the test. One particular highlight was a recent visit to Catterick to meet the Scots Guards, offering an interesting behind-the-scenes look at life in the Regular Army.
The detachment has also supported the long-term development of its cadets by attending regional job fairs, helping young people understand how the discipline, teamwork and confidence they gain through the cadets can support future education and career opportunities.
