Community spirit was high on Tuesday 26th June as hundreds turned out to show their support and celebrate Rotherham’s 49,000 volunteers on the BIG Volunteer Walk. Organised by Voluntary Action Rotherham (VAR) on behalf of the Rotherham Together Partnership, the annual event is one of the highlights of the calendar; helping to shine a light on thousands of unsung heroes who quietly get on with their volunteering but who we would be lost without.
Led by the City of Sheffield Pipe Band, volunteers from more than 40 different organisations and groups took part in a show of unity, walking a circuit of the town centre, directed by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors staff, saying a big public thank you and helping to make them feel valued for all that they contribute to communities across the borough.
Returning to the Rotherham Minster, all walkers were treated to a goody bag, cake, refreshments provided by Tesco Extra Rotherham, motivational speeches and an incredible rendition of Amazing Grace performed by Rotherham Community Choirs and City of Sheffield Pipe Band.
Janet Wheatley, CEO at VAR, said: “What a fabulous event, the atmosphere was brilliant and it was great to see so many volunteers and staff from the voluntary, community, private and public sectors there and everyone coming out of the shops and cafés in the town centre to see what was happening. and smile and be interested.”
“It was great to be able to say thank you so publicly to the volunteers who were there along with those who couldn’t come.”
