Help to celebrate Rotherham volunteers

by | 19 June 2018 | Community Event, Rotherham

For the last few years, Voluntary Action Rotherham (VAR), with Rotherham Together Partnership and partners from across the borough have celebrated volunteering throughout the month of June and organised a series of events, including The Big Walk to raise the profile of volunteering. They organise The Big Walk in recognition of Rotherham volunteers, their efforts and contribution within the local community. There are almost 50,000 volunteers in Rotherham who support local services and projects every day.
VAR is organising the walk again this year on Tuesday 26th June, starting at Rotherham Minster (12.00pm registration, walking 12.30pm to 1.15pm). They plan to walk through the town centre, a route that will take approximately 45 minutes, before arriving back at the Minister for coffee and cake (from 1.15pm to 2.30pm) and finally, a selection of guest speakers from the local community including; The Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Alan Buckley and Chief Superintendent (Rotherham Local Policing Commander) Rob Odell (from 2.30pm to 3.00pm).
Kerry McGrath, Volunteer Training and Development Coordinator at VAR, said: “Many local organisations tell us that they would close tomorrow without volunteers. We are very proud of our volunteers in Rotherham and the contribution that they make. The walk is just one way that we can say thank you.”

The event is open to Rotherham volunteers and volunteer-involving organisations. Whether you want to attend on your own, or with a group of colleagues, you will be very welcome. Also on the day, will be music from Rotherham Community Choirs and Sheffield Pipe Band, free goody bags for all walkers, a Selfie Station, magician, ‘Sign up to Volunteering’ stands at Rotherham Minster and Rotherham Town Centre and a volunteer message book — leave a message in the book about the day and tell everyone why your volunteers are great.
