Enjoy every day

The wisdom of the advice “Carpe diem” (seize the day) has been roundly confirmed by the pandemic. Confined to their homes and immediate surroundings, people, many of whom were absolute novices, responded to this advice by taking to the internet and other media to keep in touch with friends and families, take part in social activities and to buy food, clothes and entertainment, generally adding enjoyment to otherwise bleak days.
In common with many other organisations, Rotherham u3a (Ru3a) embraced new technologies to keep its social networks alive and allow members to meet virtually.
Gradually, easing of restrictions brought opportunities to meet face to face. Taking advantage of this, in April the Grow Your Own group plunged spades into their productive allotment in Clifton Park’s walled garden. At the same time, the new Walking Cricket group took up their bats and have recently played in a tournament and hosted friendly matches against Barnsley, Doncaster and Sheffield u3a.
Ru3a Strollers group enjoyed their first socially distanced steps in June, with a round-walk along the canal to Holmes. Two further circular walks in July took them from Boston Castle Grove through Canklow Woods and from Wickersley Woods to Slack’s Farm respectively. Meanwhile some indoor groups are continuing to meet virtually, whilst others are taking a summer break.
With an eye on a rosier future, plans are underway for a welcome re-opening of all Rotherham u3a activities next month. All venues, indoor or outdoor, provide COVID-safe environments and any revised guidelines will be observed. A “new kind of normality” as they say. Carpe diem.
