Braithwell Wheelbarrow Races

by | 2 July 2022 | Community Event, Rotherham

The Braithwell Wheelbarrow Races are back. Enjoy a safe and friendly fun day out for all the family on the Braithwell and Micklebring Playing Fields at the Ruddle Centre, Doncaster Road, Braithwell S66 7BA on Saturday 2nd July from 11.00am to 8.00pm.

All races will take place in safety on the new 375 metre long circular grass track on the field – viewing areas on the slope and within the race track itself will be the new children’s entertainment area.

There will also be refreshments on sale and seven races will be held during the afternoon.

The Braithwell Wheelbarrow races began in 1951 following a bet over a beer in the local public house – the challenge was for two people to push each other in a wheelbarrow along a defined route, drinking more beers at public houses along the way. The village’s unique event was started by Mr Arnold Pawson and Mr Dennis Dunstan and they were the driving force behind it for close on 70 years.
