Volunteering in the Winthrop Café

Are you someone who can strike up a conversation easily? Could you take and deliver customer order? Are you looking to collect your 5,000 steps a day? Have you a few hours to spare every week or two?A
If so, you could be someone they’re looking to meet and become a volunteer in the fabulous cafe down at Winthrop!

Winthrop is a one-acre sensory and community garden and café on Second Lane, off Morthen Road, in Wickersley which is very proudly owned by Wickersley Parish Council. It’s a hugely popular local venue where visitors from near and a little further away come to visit. And all they do and deliver at Winthrop is volunteer-led.

As they look forward to the festive season they are looking to expand their team of café volunteers. You’d need to be able to commit a few hours once a week or once a fortnight. If your child or grandchild has just started school and you’ve a few hours to spare regularly to dedicate to a community activity – well, then Winthrop could be just the place for you!

All the medics tell us of the benefits social interaction, meeting new people and expanding your social life – Winthrop fits that spec just perfectly!

Winthrop is open three days a week – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – and volunteering would require you to commit to a regular pattern: 3.5 hours a shift, either weekly or fortnightly and on a day to suit you. Giving Second Lane in Wickersley a facelift!

There was a fantastic response to Winthrop’s request for volunteers to and join their ‘Second Lane Action Force’! Second Lane is more than just the road to Winthrop – it’s also very popular with walkers, runners, cyclists, dogs and their owners, allotmenteers and even the occasional horse and rider. So, they sent out a call for people to help with the tidy up and cutting back. There was an amazing response and their Action Force already has 49 members. So far, they’ve filled two eight ton skips and the lane is looking so much better – with green footpaths and a number of green refuges for pedestrians and passing places for cars – all with the aim of making the lane better and safer for all its users.

It’s been a really great show of community spirit with huge community support – just brilliant! To join them get in touch with Winthrop Organiser, Anna Chester on 07397 039226 or email winthropgardens1@gmail.com.
