Memory Café guests walk their socks off

On Friday 7th July guests, carers and volunteers at the Winthrop Memory Café did their sponsored ‘Walk together around Winthrop’ raising funds for the Winthrop Memory Café and Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Said Winthrop Organiser Anna Chester: “Everyone had a really great time. Many of our guests made tremendous efforts to complete the walk but with the aid of strollers, sticks, zimmers, wheelchairs and the helping arms of carers they did it! A tremendous achievement of which we are all so very proud, lots of talking, laughing and singing just proving that dementia needn’t get in the way of living a good life.”

Huge thanks to everyone who has supported this fundraising effort – £1,546 had been raised by 10th July and there is a bit more to come – anyone wishing to make a donation can do so via-https://gofund.me/df254298.

Winthrop Memory Café welcomes people living with dementia and their carers – BUT there is a waiting list at the moment. If you’d like to go on the list please call Anna Chester on 07397 039226.

Second Lane Action Force

Saturday 29th July, 10.00am – 1.00pm

Second Lane, the approach to Winthrop Gardens and the Wickersley Allotments, has got untidy and a bit overgrown. It’s also a very popular route for walkers and runners and so for the benefit of everyone, Winthrop plans a ‘team’ approach to get it back into shape!

They’re inviting all users to give them a hand—walkers, runners, dogwalkers, Allotmenteers and, of course, Winthrop volunteers and customers!

The Council are on board to trim the trees back but the verges and hedges need attention and that’s why they’re having an Action Morning!

So if you can you spare an hour or two to help, please go along on Saturday 29th July with your gloves and any tools you think would help!

Ring Anna Chester on 07397 039226 to volunteer your services or with any questions.

Supporting the gardeners of the future

Winthrop volunteers were delighted to host the St Albans School Gardening Club on Sunday 9th July, raising funds to buy a new greenhouse for the school garden. The Gardening Club is becoming increasingly popular and volunteers were delighted to support Miss Nightingale and her team.

The ‘Junior Bake Off’ was very well supported with some amazing bakes that were enjoyed by visitors with their cuppa and there were also plants and flowers grown by the children for sale, a tombola, face painting, pom poms and the opportunity to adopt a gnome! Lovely also to have live singing from members of the Wickersley Youngstars – in rehearsals for their autumn production of Sister Act.

A fantastic £810 was raised on the day!
