Here are two seemingly unrelated questions, namely: ‘Who or what is referred to as a Jumping Flea?’ and ‘Is the ukulele the new recorder?’.
‘Jumping flea’ is the English translation of the Hawaiian word ‘ukulele’ and is also the nickname given to a skilled player whose fingers move rapidly across the fretboard. Watch You Tube clips of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain in action, and you’ll be treated to a digital circus of jumping fleas leaping over the frets.
As for the ukulele, it’s certainly grown in popularity, not only with adults worldwide, but also in UK schools, where many teachers are choosing it, rather than the recorder to introduce children to music-making. Often seen as trendier than recorders, ukuleles are easy to learn, affordable, and have the added advantage of allowing players to sing along as they pluck the strings.
In tune with musical trends, Rotherham u3a (Ru3a) ukulele players strummed their first song together in 2021. Members generally learn new skills from each other, but also occasionally invite an expert tutor to provide additional learning workshops. As confidence and ability developed, they entertained fellow Ru3a members at social events and took their music to a variety of community groups.
George Harrison once remarked: “It’s hard to play a ukulele… without smiling. It tends to lighten your life a bit.”
