How green are your fingers? Have you an hour or two to spare every week or two?

If so – you could be someone they’re looking for to take on volunteering opportunities in the beautiful gardens down at Winthrop!

Winthrop is a one-acre sensory and community garden and café on Second Lane, off Morthen Road, in Wickersley, which is very proudly owned by Wickersley Parish Council. It’s a hugely popular local venue where visitors from near and a little further away go to visit of lovely gardens and enjoy and cuppa and cake or scone. And all that they do and deliver at Winthrop is volunteer-led.

As they look forward to the next gardening year, they’re looking to expand their team of garden volunteers. They’re looking for people who are interested in gardening – whether experienced or not – to help maintain their beautiful, sensory gardens – much loved by all their visitors and customers.

All the medics tell us of the benefits of gardening for our physical and mental wellbeing, so here’s your chance to endorse that!

Volunteering in their gardens can be very flexible around your needs and commitments and there is work to do all year round. There are groups of gardeners volunteering on each day during the week (Monday to Friday – usually in the mornings). And there’s a whole range of opportunities to suit all levels of fitness, stamina and experience – with the opportunity to learn new skills to apply in your own garden if you have one!

Choose from greenhouse work – especially in the spring and autumn, work in the gardens, or on the allotment. Volunteers also work hard to keep the approach to Winthrop neat and tidy, and a great array of hand and power tools, particularly helped by a recent grant from local councillors, aim to make jobs as easy as possible!

And best of all – you’d be spending your time with a very friendly and welcoming group of people. If you’re interested in finding out more call Anna Chester on 07397 039226, email winthropgardens1@gmail.com or, better still, pop down for a cuppa and a chat!
