The life and times of Archbishop Rotherham, on the 600th anniversary of his birth, will be marked at a special event.

The Friends of Rotherham Chapel on the Bridge are hosting the event at Rotherham Minster to celebrate the anniversary 1423-2023, on Saturday 19th August from 10.30am to 3.00pm.

They will have display boards about his life and association with his hometown, the Chapel of Jesus, The College of Jesus including the Grammar School and The Chapel on the Bridge.

The Feoffees of the Common Lands of Rotherham, the town’s oldest charity, will display the Feoffees Regalia and show their close connection to the Chapel on the Bridge. The Civic Society will be there with their display of blue plaques.

A rare opportunity to visit the Ringing Room in the Tower of All Saints will also be available at intervals during the event.

However, booking is essential on the day and is subject to strict criteria. There will be a charge of £5.00 per person. Children over 10 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

They have borrowed the John Griffin exhibition of Grammar School photos and details of Thomas Rotherham’s life from Thomas Rotherham College. If you have any memorabilia you would like to share please go along with it. Rotherham College (RCAT) also plan to be involved. You may find a couple of wandering medieval minstrels chatting to you.

Organisers have also arranged for the little medieval museum in the Three Cranes, the oldest secular medieval building in the town (opposite the Minster) to be open from 12.00pm. Tea, coffee and cake will be available.
