It has been 10 years since the director of Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club last took charge of a production. In 2016, The Ladykillers kept both the cast and audiences laughing throughout rehearsals and performance week, thanks to Graham Linehan’s wonderfully funny script. Now, preparations are well underway for One Man, Two Guv’nors, which comes to the Plowright Theatre in Scunthorpe this September.
The play is one of the best-known and most popular modern comedies, and because the rights are not always available to amateur companies, the opportunity to stage it was one the club was delighted to seize. Rehearsals are already underway with a talented and enthusiastic cast who are just as excited to bring the production to life as its director. The characters are beginning to develop, the story is taking shape, and the energy needed for the show is already evident. Summer rehearsals can be demanding, but the cast have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and good humour.
Set in Brighton in 1963, One Man, Two Guv’nors follows Francis Henshall, an out-of-work musician who has not eaten since the previous night and is desperate to earn enough money for a decent meal. Unexpectedly, and in extraordinary circumstances, he finds himself employed by two masters at the same time.
How can one man possibly serve two guv’nors? Will Francis succeed in keeping his two employers from discovering each other? And, perhaps most importantly, will he finally get his fish, chips and mushy peas?
Richard Bean’s fast-paced, high-energy farce, based on The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni, is packed with twists, misunderstandings and comic tension. With Francis at the centre of the chaos, desperately trying to make ends meet while everything threatens to unravel around him, audiences can look forward to an evening full of laughter.
