Winthrop Gardens

by | 30 January 2026 | Community Event, Community Focus, Local Experiences, Rother

Winthrop Gardens will re-open after its festive break on Tuesday 3rd February. They’re celebrating their first year in their new Café, a year which has been very successful. The volunteers have welcomed lots of new customers and been delighted to see how much regular customers have enjoyed the new facilities. It’s also been a great year for volunteer recruitment and they now have 106 volunteers – supporting the busy Cafe, helping in the gardens and greenhouse, leading and supporting the three regular walking groups, the treasured team who ensure a fabulous range of home made cakes, crafts and jams keep the craft and preserves tables well stocked and those who support the Men’s Group and twice monthly Memory Café. These are a fabulous team of really amazing people who always go the extra mile for Winthrop.

Volunteering at Winthrop

The details above give a good insight into the range of volunteering opportunities at Winthrop. If you’ve given thought to doing some volunteering in 2026 do please think about Winthrop as there is pretty much something for everyone and you’d be joining a very friendly and welcoming group of people. They’re particularly looking to recruit a couple more home bakers and anyone who’d like to help with jam and marmalade making.

Regular activities at Winthrop

Winthrop’s walking groups step out each week, for short walks on a Tuesday afternoon and longer walks on a Wednesday morning. You’ll find lots of information about these on the WinthropWalks Facebook page. Their monthly walk for those with sight and hearing issues is always on the first Thursday morning of the month – get in touch if you’re interested in joining and need the support of one of their experienced guides.
Their Men’s Group meets on the first Thursday of each month for games, quizzes and lots of talking! This is a great group of older men who are always delighted to welcome new members.
Winthrop’s games morning is open to everyone on the third Thursday of the month, with the opportunity to play favourite games or learn something new!
The popular Winthrop Memory Café meets on the first and third Friday of each month. Organisers ask people to contact them before attending so they can explain how things work and be ready to welcome new guests – email winthropgardens1@gmail.com or ring 07397 039226 to find out more.
