Aurora is a local cancer charity providing support in Bassetlaw for people living with cancer or a long-term health condition. They also offer a safe and warm environment for everyone, whether they are feeling lonely, want to meet new people or take up a new hobby. Their community hub offers a wide range of heritage and wellbeing activities that promote self-care, reduce isolation and help people reconnect with their community. Their tearoom, Valerie’s Tearoom, serves home-cooked meals, delicious cakes and can also offer pre-booked afternoon teas or private functions.
The Aurora Red Duck Race
Join Aurora at the Shireoaks WI Duck Race, where they will be hosting their Red Duck Race as part of this community event. For just £20.00, you can sponsor your own Red Duck and help raise vital funds for Aurora Wellbeing while enjoying a fun-filled afternoon by the River Ryton. The event will take place on Sunday 21st June, with the Red Duck Race starting at 2.30pm, followed by the main Shireoaks WI Duck Race at 3.00pm, featuring over 800 ducks. It promises to be a lively and enjoyable afternoon for all.
Sponsoring a Red Duck is a great way to get involved, whether as an individual, business, organisation, club, or in memory of a loved one. Your sponsorship includes entry of your Red Duck into the race, your name featured on the charity’s online ‘duck pond’, recognition displayed at the centre, and a dedicated social media mention. All sponsors will also be entered into a prize draw to win a bespoke wellbeing bundle, with options such as beauty treatments, afternoon teas and wellbeing workshops.

Volunteering opportunities
Volunteers play a vital role in supporting Aurora Wellbeing, and they are always keen to welcome new people to their team, particularly to help with the charity shop and fundraising activities.
Within the shop, there are a variety of hands-on roles available, including shopfloor merchandising, customer service, operating the till, stock sorting, cleaning and restocking. They are also seeking someone with a creative flair to help develop a new haberdashery section in-store, as well as volunteers who can support the growth of e-commerce activities. For those interested in fundraising, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, including bucket collecting, representing Aurora at local events, helping with leaflet distribution, or selling raffle tickets. These roles are a great way to meet new people while making a meaningful contribution to a local cause.
