Transforming lives through creativity and connection: The ‘Art of Wellbeing’ groups in Rotherham

At Active Independence, they believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to stay active, feel connected, and enjoy their community without barriers. That is why they are thrilled to announce they have secured three years of funding from The National Lottery Community Fund: Reaching Communities. This support allows them to expand their Art of Wellbeing programme across Rotherham, specifically designed for disabled people, carers, and Personal Assistants (PAs). They have tailored a programme that focuses on creativity, community, and making friends with groups including:

  • Creative Threads meets every Tuesday from 11.00am at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall in Maltby. Many members create beautiful handmade quilts that are donated to Project Linus for children in need. However, you are also very welcome to take your own personal project to complete in the company of others.
  • Crafting Together – Upcycling for Good meets every first, third and fifth Wednesday of the month, from 12.30pm at The Brecks Community Hub. The sessions focus on creative ways to repurpose items, offering a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills while connecting with your local community.

Chief Executive Barbara Booton said: “We have worked hard to set up activities which are as welcoming and accessible as possible, reducing many of the barriers disabled people, and those who support them, face in everyday life. Our members tell us every week of the difference taking part has made to their confidence, not only from being more active but from making new friends.”

They would love to see you at one of their upcoming sessions. For a full list of dates, times, and how to get involved, please visit http://activeindependence.org/wp/events/. You can read members’ inspiring stories and feedback at activeindependence.org/wp/testimonials/.
