Inspire Libraries is hosting a number of heritage events during April, including talks and one-to-one sessions exploring local history and archaeology.
Worksop Library will welcome Emily Gillott for a talk titled Recent Archaeological Discoveries in Nottinghamshire on Wednesday 15th April from 2.00pm to 3.00pm. Emily, a Planning Archaeologist with Nottinghamshire County Council, will share fascinating stories about recent discoveries across the county. Topics include cremations and burials, Roman villas and pottery, ritual landscapes in Skegby, charcoal burning in Sherwood Forest and more. Tickets are £3.50 and booking is essential.
Inspire Libraries will also host a Family History Surgery for Beginners on Wednesday 29th April, offering free one-to-one sessions with a librarian. These sessions are ideal for anyone looking for guidance on researching their family history. Four time slots are available: 2.00pm, 2.30pm, 3.00pm and 3.30pm. Sessions can take place by phone or via Zoom.
At Retford Library, historian Robert Mee will present a talk titled Almshouses – Past, Present and Local on Thursday 30th April from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. The talk will explore the origins of almshouses in the Byzantine era, their development during the medieval period and their continued role in modern times. Robert will also discuss around 30 to 40 almshouses located close to Retford, some of which are still in use today. Tickets are £3.50 and booking is essential.
