Over the last year, members of Rotherham u3a photography group have been seriously developing their skills with the help of a local professional landscape photographer, Chris Ceaser (www.chrisceaser.co.uk).

Having seen one of his presentations on Venice, group coordinator, Diane Watson, attended Chris’s four-day Venice photography workshops. Whilst finding the 5.00am starts for the dawn shots were a bit of a shock to the system, they proved well worth the effort. Following a group visit to Chris’s studio in Scrooby in March, Chris gave members a fantastic, illustrated talk on landscape photography technique. Five members subsequently attended a one-day practical workshop at Clumber Park, organised by Chris in conjunction with the National Trust.

In August, two members attended, and thoroughly enjoyed, one of Chris’s four-day workshops in the Lake District, and a further two went to Budapest in December for a second cityscape workshop. Additionally, another member, Sue, has enjoyed two photographic trips to Scotland with different professionals and with some stunning results.

There is no doubt that all group members have learned a lot from these contacts during the year, helping them constantly to improve their photographic eye and techniques. Their regular group field trips during 2025 have seen them travel to interesting new locations, including Lincoln, the Humber Bridge and the Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield. Members have also enjoyed some success in having their photographs selected for showing on the U3A Eye website and appearing on local calendars. They’re now busy devising another exciting programme for 2026. Constantly developing skills, enjoying learning with and from each other is the core principle of the u3a. Widen your horizons with Ru3a.
