Course: Researching Family History – An Introduction
Anyone interested in tracing their family tree but unsure where to begin is invited to join Inspire’s six-week introductory course. The course will introduce the main types of records used in family history research and show how to locate family information online and elsewhere. Participants will explore key sources such as birth, marriage and death records, census returns, the 1939 England and Wales Register and parish registers. Using sample documents and case studies, the course will help develop effective research skills for growing a family tree. A practical session is included, offering the chance to search online for ancestors using library laptops and Inspire’s free access to www.ancestry.co.uk. Guidance will also be given on how to organise and record research. The course will run on Saturdays from 10.00am to 12.00pm, from 17th January to 21st February. Heritage Talk: The Worksop and Retford Brewery Company
On Wednesday 21st January, from 2.00pm to 3.00pm, local authors and researchers Dave Pickersgill and John Stocks will present the half-forgotten story of one of Worksop’s foremost former industries. The talk will explore the history of the Worksop and Retford Brewery Company, from its 19th-century origins to its 1959 takeover by Sheffield brewers Tennants, and its impact on cultural and sporting life in Bassetlaw.
