The best gifts are often those that arrive unexpectedly and hold little or no monetary value – gifts such as offering someone a helping hand or giving them your time and attention.
While playing one of their regular Friday morning games at The Boundary Indoor Cricket Centre in Sheffield, the Rotherham u3a Walking Cricket team received a priceless gift from an unexpected source. Team members were astonished to see that the batsman practising his strokes in the neighbouring nets was none other than local cricketing legend Joe Root – the world’s second-highest Test run scorer. This took place shortly before Joe’s departure for the England–New Zealand One Day International series, followed by the Ashes tour to Australia.
During their break, the Rotherham u3a cricketers watched in awe as Joe skilfully faced a series of fast balls. When his session ended, Joe came over to chat with the team about cricket and kindly posed for a group photograph, as well as individual pictures with members. The chance encounter demonstrated not only Joe’s technical brilliance and relentless pursuit of perfection, but also his reputation as an approachable, unassuming and personable sportsman. Ten minutes of his time, given freely, brought immeasurable joy and a lasting memory to this group of walking cricketers.
If you are interested in joining Rotherham u3a but are unsure, you can attend up to two sessions free of charge before deciding. Although not cost-free, annual membership costs less than a weekly shop-bought coffee and provides access to more than 35 activities, termly socials and new friendships – truly a gift that keeps on giving.
