1066 and all that

by | 14 November 2025 | Education and Learning, Heritage, Local Experiences, Rother

It all started with the Norman invasion in 1066, when the conquerors’ language began to merge with Anglo-Saxon, producing a new form of spoken English. An estimated 30% to 45% of modern English words have French origins and, much to the dismay of l’Académie Française, a slightly larger percentage of French words originated from English.

France is our nearest neighbour and a long-time favourite holiday destination. French remained the most popular language at A level until it was overtaken by Spanish around 2020. It follows that most adults leaving secondary education before 2019 will have learned French at some level. If you are one of those ex-students and would like to re-learn, refresh and develop your spoken French, why not join one of the three French Conversation groups available at Rotherham u3a (Ru3a)? You will have a head start.

Speaking a second language not only exercises memory and reasoning skills, but is also a fascinating, enjoyable and satisfying activity. Learning French in the friendly and relaxed atmosphere of a Ru3a group is a sure-fire way to improve your confidence and fluency in spoken French and to widen your social circle. Whether your French-speaking skills are polished or rusty, there is a group to suit you. You are certain to receive a warm and supportive welcome from fellow Francophiles as you explore and discuss a wide range of topics chosen to match the interests of group members.

Find the right starting point for you by joining up to two free sessions with the group that best fits your present level, as described in the Groups section of the Ru3a website: http://rotherham.u3asite.uk.
