The sound of gleaming instruments and toe-tapping tunes is ringing out once again at the Miners Welfare, as Worksop Miners Welfare Band welcomes a new conductor, fresh energy, and an open invitation to players old and new. With its 200th anniversary in sight in 2032, the band is determined to keep the proud brass band tradition alive and thriving in the town. The band is also available for bookings to bring live brass music to events, concerts and celebrations.
Worksop Miners Welfare Band has been part of the town’s history since at least 1832. In the 1800s, brass bands became a popular pastime for miners, offering a welcome distraction from the long hours and hard work underground. Nearly two centuries later, many of Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire’s long standing bands now face the same challenge – there are more bands than there are players. Worksop Miners Welfare Band, however, is determined to buck the trend. This year marks an exciting new chapter with the appointment of new conductor Bob Woffinden. Bob brings fresh energy, enthusiasm and a wealth of experience, and together with the members aims to build the band back to full strength in time for the bicentenary.
Why do brass bands continue after all these years? A Wednesday evening at the Miners Welfare on Carlton Road gives the answer. Around 20 players give up an hour and a half of their week to make music together. As the saying goes, ‘Music self-played is pleasure self-made’. Playing music, especially as part of a group, is profoundly satisfying. It is not only the music but also the friendships and shared sense of achievement that keep players coming back. The band does not take part in contests but performs concerts throughout the year, which are always warmly received. Instruments and music are provided, and there are currently vacancies for trombone and horn players in particular – though anyone, whatever their instrument or ability, will be made very welcome, including complete beginners.
Rehearsals take place every Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9.00pm at the Miners Welfare, Carlton Road, Worksop. A free loan of an instrument can be offered to help new members get started.
