The speaker at the August meeting of Worksop and District u3a was Sam Millard, who spoke on the subject of Reason and Rhyme.
For many generations we have taught our infant children what we now know as nursery rhymes. However, few realised that these rhymes were often based on real-life events and people from the past. Reason and Rhyme explored some of the stories and the ways they have been recorded through the years. Members certainly learned some surprising facts about stories familiar from childhood, making it a fascinating and much enjoyed talk.
The next meeting is on Thursday 16th October, when the speaker will be Maureen Taylor with her talk Bess of Hardwick – A Woman of Many Parts. Maureen, a historian and volunteer at Hardwick Hall for 11 years, will be dressed in Tudor costume to set the scene as she tells the story of this remarkable lady. The meeting will be held at the Civic Centre, Carlton-in-Lindrick. Doors open at 1.30pm for tea and coffee.
