The recent Community Nature Day at the Wildlife Discovery Area on the Woodlands and Coachwood Green on Friday 27th June was a celebration of discovery, community and the benefits of connecting with nature. The event highlighted the rich biodiversity of the site and the work of dedicated volunteer organisations and nature enthusiasts from across the Wilder Nottinghamshire network.
In partnership with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, Kind and Wildful, Nottinghamshire Amphibian and Reptile Group, Nottinghamshire Bat Group, the British Dragonfly Society, Lound Bird Club, The Chesterfield Canal Trust and the Asda Foundation, visitors enjoyed a variety of nature-filled activities. From butterfly and dragonfly counts to foraging walks and narrowboat trips along the Chesterfield Canal, the day was designed to encourage community spirit and create opportunities for people to connect with each other and the natural environment.
The Wildlife Discovery Area is open to the public and available for use by community groups and schools. The Friends of Woodlands and Coachwood Green in Shireoaks is a volunteer group focused on conserving and enhancing biodiversity. New volunteers are always welcome. Whether you are a gardener, DIY enthusiast, nature lover or simply enjoy the outdoors, there are opportunities to get involved. Task days are held on the third Saturday of every month, and activities this autumn will include building log piles, collecting seeds and mulching. Volunteers can also take on regular roles such as wildlife monitoring.
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and make a positive difference – you never know where it might lead.
