Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture, takes place this year from Friday 12th to Sunday 21st September, and Inspire Libraries will be hosting several free heritage events. At Retford Library, celebrations will form part of Retford’s annual Heritage Day on Saturday 13th September. The library will be open as usual, with visitors welcome to drop in to the Heritage Area from 10.00am to 3.00pm to explore historical items relating to local buildings and architecture (no booking required). Two free talks will be held in the library’s meeting room:
- The Architecture of the Chesterfield Canal by Rod Auton from the Chesterfield Canal Trust – 11.00am to 12.00pm.
- Architectural Curiosities of Retford by Bassetlaw District Council’s Conservation Manager, Michael Tagg – 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

- The Horse and Nottinghamshire’s Country House Stables by Buildings Archaeologist Janine Buckley – Friday 12th September, 2.00pm to 3.00pm.
- Black British Ballet by Dr Sandie Bourne – Wednesday 17th September, 10.00am to 11.00am. This talk explores the hidden history of Black British ballet from the 1940s to the present day, followed by a Q&A. It accompanies the Black British Ballet: Into the Light exhibition, on display in Worksop Library’s gallery from Saturday 30th August to Monday 29th September.

Virtual Reality and more at Worksop Library’s Fun Palace
Worksop Library’s popular Fun Palace returns on Saturday 4th October from 10.00am to 3.00pm, offering a range of free art, science, health and heritage activities for all ages. No booking is required – simply go along and enjoy the fun. As part of the Digital Spaces programme, visitors can also experience free virtual reality sessions, alongside the many other activities happening throughout the day.
