Maltby is making history with the launch of a brand-new Army Cadet detachment – the first new cadet unit to open in South Yorkshire in over two decades. This exciting development brings fresh opportunities for local young people and a meaningful connection to Maltby’s proud heritage.
The new cadet unit will be affiliated with the prestigious Scots Guards regiment, a link chosen to honour the deep historical ties between the Scots Guards and Maltby’s mining community. In the 20th century, many Scottish miners relocated to Maltby to work at the Maltby Colliery, bringing with them a strong work ethic and a sense of camaraderie that still thrives in the community today. The new detachment is a tribute to that enduring connection.
Joining the Army Cadets offers young people aged 12 to 18 a wealth of benefits. It is a place to learn new skills, gain confidence, and build friendships. From fieldcraft and first aid to leadership training and drill, cadets are encouraged to challenge themselves and grow. One of the highlights for many is the opportunity to attend annual summer camps, where cadets from across the UK come together for a week of adventurous training, team-building activities, and unforgettable memories.
The Maltby detachment meets every Monday and Thursday from 7.00pm to 9.00pm, and it is completely free to attend. Young people from surrounding areas such as Wickersley, Dinnington, Bramley, and beyond are more than welcome to join.
