Bassetlaw Museum’s two fascinating exhibitions continue this month, so please call in to the Museum on Grove Street, Retford to enjoy them.

The Invisible Light Exhibition by Alan Withington

Runs until Saturday 30th August

This striking exhibition showcases images created using ultraviolet (UV) light – a spectrum invisible to most people. Each photograph holds a hidden meaning, reflecting the unseen light that produced them. The images capture well-loved places and evoke powerful emotions. The exhibition features techniques known as ‘alternative processes’, blending ancient photographic methods with modern digital elements to produce positive images. These approaches, which use paper ‘negatives’ and avoid darkroom chemicals, include in-camera cyanotypes, in-camera lumens, lumen photograms and solargraphs.

Photographer Alan Withington, who has embraced these techniques over the past five years, presents images that require long exposure times, from 45 minutes to over four months. His work responds to the rapid pace of modern life and the impact of artificial intelligence on creative authenticity, highlighting the value of photography crafted with patience and intention.
