Could you help care for a future guide dog?

Guide Dogs is urgently appealing for volunteer fosterers in Rotherham and surrounding areas, to give a temporary loving home for one of their life changing dogs in training.

As a volunteer Training Dog Fosterer, you’ll provide a loving home for a future guide dog in the advanced stages of its training, typically between 14 and 24 months of age, and enjoy the companionship of a dog, with the flexibility and the fact Guide Dogs cover costs such as food and vet bills.

It’s a commitment that can fit around your lifestyle.

Fosterers are asked to drop off and pick up the dog each day from the charity’s training site at Sheffield Business Park in Tinsley, similar to a ‘school run’ during the week and give the dog a comfortable and loving environment during evenings and weekends.

Melanie Brown, Volunteering Attraction Coordinator for Guide Dogs in Sheffield, said: “As the need for our services continues to grow and we bring more dogs through our breeding and training programmes, we need more volunteers to support training dogs. If you think you could provide a loving temporary home, please reach out!”

Guide Dogs primarily works with Labradors and Golden Retrievers, often crossing the two to capture the best qualities of each breed. These breeds make up nearly 80% of Guide Dogs’ program, valued for their temperament and trainability.

This vital role ensures that these special dogs have a comfortable and loving environment to go home to each day, to help set them up for success.
