The Friends of Woodlands and Coachwood Green volunteer group enjoyed a fantastic monthly task day on site, mulching the new orchard and maintaining the recently planted hawthorn hedgerow. The weather was lovely, and new friendships were made. Whether you are a gardener, DIY enthusiast, nature lover, or simply enjoy being outdoors, the task days are a great opportunity to get involved. The group meets once a month, with details available on their website: www.woodlandsandcoachwoodgreen.co.uk/news/volunteer-with-us.
The June task day focussed on a general tidy-up in preparation for the upcoming Community Nature Day, which takes place in the Wildlife Discovery Area, Marina Drive, Shireoaks, on Sunday 27th July from 10.30am to 3.00pm.
With support from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, the National Trust, British Dragonfly Society, Chesterfield Canal Trust, Nottinghamshire Bat Group, and Nottinghamshire Amphibian and Reptile Group, the day will include pond dipping, mini foraging, participation in the Big Butterfly Count, dragonfly education, and more. Everyone is welcome – no expertise is needed, just enthusiasm and curiosity to explore and learn about local habitats, species, and birdlife.
The bird hide will be officially opened on the day, complete with benches made by Men in Sheds, places to record sightings, and identification resources, all funded by the Asda Foundation. The Chesterfield Canal Trust will also be offering narrowboat trips on the Hugh Henshall along a scenic stretch of the Chesterfield Canal.
There will be coffee and ice cream available, and Shireoaks offers beautiful walks and further options for refreshments. Entry and parking are both free.
