The April meeting of the Worksop Archaeological and Local History Society featured Elaine Perkins presenting as a medieval wise woman. She offered insights into the charms and objects which, many hundreds of years ago, took the place of modern medicine and the ‘agony aunts’ of today. Belief in these charms was often central to the ‘cure’, and many of these superstitions still exist today, albeit often unrecognised, as ways of bringing good luck.
Certain stones or rocks, for example, were said to keep a wayward husband faithful, while pieces of volcanic rock placed by a doorway supposedly protected against fire. These items had to be purchased from the wise woman – or witch – and replaced regularly. Charms written on cloth and positioned strategically within the home were thought to ward off illness. Herbs and flowers were also used for their protective or healing properties.
The next meeting will take place on Thursday 26th June and will feature a presentation from Bob Evens (subject to be confirmed). Please note the later summer start time of 7.30pm.
Meetings are held at The Poplars Church (formerly The Golden Ball), Victoria Square. Parking is available at the rear for members. New members and visitors interested in local history are always welcome. Membership costs £6.00 for the year, while visitors may attend for £4.00 per meeting. Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month.
