Are you struggling to pay your Council Tax?

by | 11 June 2025 | Citizens Advice, Worksop

The annual Council Tax bills for the 2025-26 year have recently been issued by the District Council. Council Tax payments help fund local services, including schools, adult and children’s services, the police and fire services, as well as many Council services such as housing, benefits and refuse collections. Payments can be made in 10 or 12 monthly instalments.

You may be eligible for a reduction in your Council Tax bill.

In addition to Government discount schemes – such as the single occupier or disability discounts – residents may be entitled to a further reduction known as Council Tax Reduction.

What is Council Tax Reduction?

The District Council operates a local discount scheme to support working-age residents on low incomes or receiving certain welfare benefits, helping them afford their Council Tax. Households with at least one person of pensionable age fall under the Government Council Tax Reduction scheme, which is means-tested and considers age, household composition, income and savings.

For working-age households, there are five levels of discount (referred to as income bands) depending on household income and circumstances.

Below is a table outlining the income bands for the 2025-26 scheme.

If savings and investments are below £16,000 and income falls within one of these bands, residents are encouraged to enquire about claiming Council Tax Reduction.

Claiming Council Tax Reduction follows the same process regardless of age. Citizens Advice North Nottinghamshire can assist with checking eligibility and, if appropriate, help with completing the online application. The process is simple and straightforward.
