The February meeting of Worksop Archaeological and Local History Society was held on Thursday 27th, with speaker Emily Gillott, the County Archaeologist for Nottinghamshire, discussing Rufford Abbey.
Having access to extensive historical records, she shared her research on the Abbey and the land on which it stands. Using old maps and deeds, she traced its history and use long before any buildings existed. She also provided insights into the work already carried out to improve visitor access and safety, as well as future plans for further developments – making it well worth another visit.
The next meeting will take place on Thursday 27th March at 2.30pm, featuring local historian Adrian Gray. His talk, ‘Worksop, Witches and a Place in American History: The Life of Richard Bernard’, promises to be an intriguing exploration of this historical figure.
Meetings are held at The Poplars Church (formerly The Golden Ball) on Victoria Square, with car parking available at the rear for members.
New members and visitors with an interest in local history are always welcome. Annual membership costs £6.00, while visitors can attend for £4.00 per meeting. Meetings take place on the fourth Thursday of each month.
