A very happy and wildlife-friendly New Year from the North Nottinghamshire group of the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust! Wildlife is under significant pressure, with a recent Earth.org survey revealing that one in six native species is at risk of extinction, with birds facing the greatest threat – 43% of species are predicted to disappear in coming decades.
What can be done? Supporting local nature reserves and wildlife organisations is a great place to start. North Nottinghamshire is fortunate to have beautiful reserves such as Idle Valley. Visitors can enjoy walks, join volunteer groups, or pick up a ‘Volunteer with us!’ card at the visitor centre to explore current opportunities.
Additionally, attending talks hosted by the local Wildlife Trust group can help build understanding and appreciation of the natural world, encouraging more effective conservation efforts.
The group’s next talk, by John Clark of the Treswell Wood bird ringers, will focus on bird ringing and the valuable insights gained over more than 50 years of studying woodland birds. This long-standing research has significantly increased understanding of birds’ habits and preferences, contributing to wildlife conservation efforts.
The talk will take place on Thursday 9th January at 7.15pm at the Idle Valley Centre. Entry is £3.00, which includes tea and biscuits. There is no need to book—just turn up and join the evening.
