One very special aspect of volunteering at the Wednesday Group is witnessing the positive difference it makes in people’s lives.
Just a week or two of sitting next to someone who talks to you instead of being alone at home, being encouraged to participate in exercises or dances, or being asked if you would like to play cards or try a bit of craft work can be all it takes. Gradually, the tension vanishes; participants begin to look relaxed, smile, and start conversations.
One day, a lady shared something that took the volunteers’ breath away: “It’s made all the difference to my life, coming here.”
The volunteers themselves also undergo change. As they gain confidence and get to know the participants better, they are more likely to adopt new approaches or try new activities. As a result, the group continuously evolves to reflect the interests and abilities of its members. It is a very different group from the one that started 10 years ago. They didn’t have live music then, nor did they consider dancing. Ten years on, it’s much more exciting!

Unfortunately, there is a waiting list at present, but the team is exploring ways to accommodate more people. Each session costs £10.00, which includes lunch, and the first visit is free!
