Bassetlaw Pride Sculpture is an exciting opportunity for the local LGBT+ community and allies to become involved in making celebratory sculptures. This opportunity has arisen after Harworth and Bircotes Pride’s organising committee put in a successful bid for arts and heritage funding from Bassetlaw District Council as part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The project is to work with local artist Kathryn Webley to create two sculptures. The first will be the ‘DRAG-ON’. This is based upon the idea of a Chinese Dragon, and it will be part of the parades at the three Pride events in Bassetlaw this July: Harworth and Bircotes, Worksop and Retford.
A second sculpture will be a permanent work celebrating diversity in people and nature to be sited in Bassetlaw. More news to follow.
Work on the first sculpture is well underway with workshops where members of the LGBT+ community and allies, plus local youth groups, have created textile art for be part of the DRAG-ON. The next step is the fun bit: constructing the DRAG-ON itself from fabric and willow.
