Winthrop Gardens will be holding its Annual Bake Off and Open Day on Saturday 29th April between 11.00am and 4.00pm.

With classes for those under 14 and those over 14, you are invited to enter one of the following four categories: Cakes; Cupcakes and Buns; Scones and Biscuits; Preserves – Jams, Marmalades, Pickles or Chutneys.

It’s free to enter – just pick up an entry form or download one from www.winthropgardens.co.uk. Email entries are also fine – apply as soon as you can and drop your entry off on either Friday 28th April between 3.00pm and 6.00pm or on Saturday 29th April between 8.00am and 9.00am.

Prizes are a £5.00 voucher to spend at Winthrop and a copy of their Platinum Jubilee Recipe Book.

The café will be open with plant sales, ‘Curiosity Corner’, a tombola, crafts, preserves, books and jigsaws too! Go along and join them and if you can walk down that would be really appreciated!

Volunteering at Winthrop

The great strength of Winthrop is its fabulous team of volunteers – working hard in the gardens, cafe and allotment and also supporting a range of other activities including the weekly craft class and walking group, home baking and the memory café. There’s a real variety of ways in which to get involved!

There’s also a social side to volunteering with Winthrop – this year, for example, they have three coach trips planned – to the Houses of Parliament in May thanks to the offices of John Healey MP, to RHS Bridgewater in July and to the Thursford Christmas Spectacular in November. Volunteers always get the first opportunity to enjoy these trips with any spare places being offered to customers, friends and supporters of Winthrop. Other social activities include volunteer ‘Get Togethers’, lunches out, cinema and theatre visits.

No particular experience is required but energy and enthusiasm are key! If this is something that might interest you call Anna Chester on 07397 039226 or email winthropgardens1@gmail.com. More information about volunteering at Winthrop can be found on www.winthropgardens.co.uk.
