Seventy-three years separate the premieres of the two French works in Ryton Chorale’s next concert at The Crossing on Saturday 26th March at 7.30pm.
Faure’s Requiem was first performed in 1888 and was subsequently revised and expanded over the years until its final version dating from 1901. In sharp contrast is the Gloria by Francis Poulenc, which caused a scandal in 1961 because of its irreverence. It is alleged that Poulenc once saw a group of solemn-looking Benedictine monks playing an aggressive game of football. The unlikely scene amused him so much it inspired the cheeky tone of his Gloria – a serious piece with some light-hearted twists.
