Having returned to the Civic Centre in Carlton for the last few meetings last year, where they have been able to listen to their lectures together, the Arts Society Dukeries are inviting you to their first lecture meeting on Wednesday 2nd February at 10.30am (with tea and coffee available from 9.45am). This is also their short AGM, when you can hear of their varied lecture programme, visits and special interest days for 2022. This lecture, given by Nigel Bates, is entitled ‘They Make No Noise – Orchestra / Choir Conductors’.
What is it that the conductors do that makes orchestras respond in so many different ways? Is it a good baton technique? A strong personality? The way they look? And why are there relatively few women found on the podium? And why are the conductors paid so much more than anyone else on the concert platform? Drawing on history and his own musical experiences from well over six thousand performances and recordings, Nigel seeks out some answers. This lecture contains some rare video footage of conductors in rehearsal and performance.
The following lecture, on Wednesday 2nd March, is entitled ‘The Healing Power of Plants’ and is given by Timothy Walker. Mankind has exploited the medicinal properties of plants for thousands of years, yet the role of plants in modern medicine is still considered to be peripheral by many people.
The Arts Society Dukeries is for those interested in the arts in all forms. They meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick, S81 9AP. Lectures last approximately one hour. There is free parking at the site. Anyone interested in the arts is invited to attend; the cost for the lecture is £7.00 for guests.
