Retford Bowling Green

The nights are drawing in, we’ve put the clocks back and we’re looking forward to Christmas. But it’s worth a moment to look back to the end of the bowling season. The last Friday in September, this year the 27th, is Macmillan Coffee Morning. At Retford Bowling Green this has always been the first of the coffee mornings which are held fortnightly through the winter. As ever, this was ably organised by Shirley Pickersgill and her friends, and was a great success. As well as the traditional coffee, tea and cakes there was a bric-a-brac stall and raffle, all raising a grand total of £682.50. Thanks must go to Shirley, her friends and everyone who went and supported this worthy cause.

As emphasised in November’s article, the closed season is the social season at the club. Friday night social gatherings kicked off in style on 4th October with a fish and chips supper for 44 people ably provided by the local chippy! These will continue every fortnight, alternating with coffee mornings, with a variety of activities. On 16th November there was a well-attended quiz night. This was the third that the club has held and, as ever, very popular. Understandably, as the quiz and a buffet cost only a fiver a go!

Once again looking forward — 7th December will be the club’s Christmas Dinner Party — a carvery dinner with dessert followed by the usual quizzes, games and singing. And finally, the New Year Party will be a ‘Dutch Buffet’ where each guest brings a dish of their own choice.
