The Arts Society Dukeries’ lectures take place at the Civic Centre, Carlton-in-Lindrick, S81 9AP Carlton on the first Wednesday of every month. Members of the Society also enjoy two extra Special Interest days, three lectures on a specific topic, newsletters, a national magazine, a coach holiday and days out to local places of interest.

The Society likes to involve local communities and has produced Trails of the local area, its churches and other special buildings.

The next lecture is on Wednesday 4th October, where Mark Ovenden will present ‘160 Years – London Underground Design and Architecture’.

This lecture covers surprising attempts to create some graphic unity, even in the 1860s and 1870s expansion of the underground, and the need to create some cohesion between the different operating companies.

It will cover Lesley Green’s architecture and the Arts and Crafts movement, Frank Pick, Edward Johnson’s type face, Charles Holden’s architecture, and the streamline Moderne / Art Deco movement, the New Works programme, postwar austerity / design, the Victoria Line, the loss of Johnson and rescue by Kono, the Jubilee Line extension / architecture, creation of TIL, plus recent schemes and future works including the Elizabeth Line/ Northern Line extension to Battersea etc.

The following lecture is on Wednesday 1st November, where Gavin Plumley covers the paintings of Pieter Bruegel in ‘Briefly: The Seasons and The World’.

Bruegel’s series of landscape paintings in 1565, charting the course of a year, changed the way we view the world and its environment through art, making the landscape the subject of the painting, rather than the backdrop.

Tea and coffee are available before the lecture, ready to start by 10.50am and lasting for approximately one hour. Free car parking is available. Members pay an annual subscription; visitors are welcome, paying at the door.
