This year’s garden visits by Ollerton Jubilee Garden Club members have been well chosen by committee members who arrange them, with the final visit to 5A High Street, Sutton-on-Trent on 1st August, proving to be one of the best.
Nineteen members and six visitors met to look around this garden. Most of it had been planted within the past five years and it was amazing to see how mature it actually was. Even more amazing was a large pond that had only been dug out within the past two years and again the planting around it was very mature. The soil dug from this area was used to good effect by creating a planted mound surrounded by sloping wooden posts. There were raised mounds in a copse where the grass has been left slightly longer to differentiate it from surrounding lawn and these have been planted with spring bulbs, an idea used by Diarmuid Gavin in one of his designs.
There were wooded areas, colourful herbaceous planting, and some tropical plants such as Aeoniums. Two members had an interesting discussion with the owner about chopping them off and replanting them when they become leggy. There were quite a few seating areas to give you different aspects of the garden and a particularly lovely patio with lots of pots containing interesting plants. Different species of Boston Ivy had been planted with the owner’s favourite planted against the house wall. Another type was growing up and along a wooden walkway and looked lovely but the owner felt he might live to regret this once it becomes more mature. I think everyone enjoyed a very pleasant evening and it was lovely to see more members had joined us this time together with more visitors. Thank you for joining us.
The club’s next meetings are:
- 5th September — the club returns to its base at Ollerton Jubilee Hall for their Autumn Show. Schedules were distributed on 1st August to members who were present and it is also included in the August newsletter. We are only a small club but the number of entries is worth seeing and if you would like to join us please do — you will be made very welcome.
- 3rd October — John Stirland, Radio Nottingham gardening expert, will be Ollerton Jubilee Garden Club’s speaker at 7.30pm, when he will be speaking about ‘His Life in Horticulture’ at the Jubilee Hall, Wellow Road, Ollerton. John has been with BBC Radio Nottingham for over 30 years and says his favourite radio moment was broadcasting from Keukenhof Gardens in Holland. He may well mention this in his talk as well as giving a humorous insight into his life in horticulture, including working on TV and for BBC Radio Nottingham and being at college with Alan Titchmarsh. Call Daphne Bowler on 07811 346359 or email email@example.com to reserve your tickets. The cost will be £3.50 per ticket for visitors.
The Club meets monthly at Ollerton Jubilee Hall from September to May, with visits organised in June, July and August. New members and visitors are always welcome. Meetings start at 7.30pm. The admission fee for members is £2.50; visitors £3.50 and refreshments are available at the end of the meeting. For more information please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01623 823572.
