Michelle Willcocks’ success

Mansfield Triathlon Club’s Michelle Willcocks has won the triathlon world championships in a thrilling race in Rotterdam to cap an outstanding year of racing. Michelle was fully 2.5 minutes ahead of the second placed athlete, completing the 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 51 seconds.

All this would be an incredible achievement in any normal circumstances but in 2011 Michelle had major life changing abdominal surgery as a result of being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Undeterred, she has used this to renew her determination to succeed in her sport. The world championships gold is just the latest in a series of outstanding results which include one European gold medal, two European silver medals and, six British and National gold medals.
Also at Rotterdam Chris Holmes was placed amongst Europe’s top ten sprint distance triathletes when he the completed the 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run in just 1 hour, 8 minutes and 46 seconds, boosted by an impressively quick swim leg.

Meanwhile, in the East Midlands junior series Tyler Broome sealed his series win with a fourth in the TriStar 1 race at Harvey Hadden Sports Village in Nottingham in a time of 17 minutes and 41 seconds. Tyler has been in pole position throughout the race season and did enough at Harvey Haddon to ensure no one could overhaul his lead. In the same race Alfie Brown finished in 20 minutes and 37 seconds with racing newcomer Thomas Barnett breaking the tape in a very credible, 29 minutes exactly.

In the TriStar 2 race the club was represented by a trio of athletes. Race veterans Daisy Wilson, Emily Tansley and Sophie Lagoe put in great performances, finishing in 31 minutes and 43 seconds, 34 minutes and 49 seconds and 37 minutes and 6 seconds respectively. Club stalwarts Emily Alcock and Ben Davies took part in the TriStar 3 event and recorded 33 minutes and 56 seconds and 31 minutes and 5 seconds respectively.
