The Rotary Club of Rotherham Sitwell is one of just 42 Yorkshire based community groups, and one of just nine Rotherham groups, who in its latest round of awards have been recognised by the prestigious royal reward scheme The Duke of York’s Community Initiative.
Members work hard in the Rotherham community to help improve the lives of others less fortunate than themselves. The motto of the club is ‘Service before Self’ and the members are passionate about developing links with the local community to fulfil this promise. As well as hands-on help to local schools, groups, and charities, they are renowned for bringing Santa and his sleigh to local areas giving children and adults alike a magical Christmas experience.
Four Rotarians had the pleasure of receiving the award from the Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe, at St Paul’s Church, Huddersfield University.
Rotarian Melanie Hughes said, “We are honoured to be receiving this award, our members try very hard to help and support the community, but if it wasn’t for the community the club couldn’t do what it does, so really, the club is receiving this award on behalf of the community that comes and supports all the events and activities we do, so thank you, people of Rotherham, we hope you feel we are making a difference too.”
You are invited to take part in two of the club’s upcoming fundraisers:

Most people know by now the value of having a defibrillator close at hand. Frequently, in the event of a heart attack, it is the only device which can reset the heart to enable it to pump in its normal rhythm. CPR alone is often not enough. Start-A-Heart 24:7 raises funds to help place defibrillators in secure accessible safes where there is no other means to ensure 24 hour a day, seven days a week access. This is a fantastic small local charity working had to save the lives of the Rotherham community.
