Wheelers Road Cycling Club

The Retford and District Wheelers Road Cycling Club is a friendly and informal club and new riders are always welcome to join members on their rides. The club meets most Sundays at Café Roubaix on Bridgegate and members’ aim is to ride to a different place/cafe every week. This can range from short local rides, to trips out to places such as Eyam in the Peak District, The Humber Bridge or Cleethorpes for fish and chips, mostly in the summer months and not every week.

What the Wheelers strive to do is ensured each ride is fun, varied and challenging to its members in order to keep them fit, active and improve as a cyclist.

New riders can join members on some of their more local rides to build up their cycling knowledge and fitness. The winter months are an ideal time to join the club, so that when it gets to summer time you can challenge yourself to ride to places you may not have considered feasible and then take in some refreshment and have the stamina to return home.

In addition to the weekly club rides, the club also has informal events throughout the year such as The Gringley Hill Climb challenge or the Christmas Fancy Dress Time Trial where members can set a marker for how they have progressed.

Destinations and start times for Club Rides can be found on the club’s Facebook page, although typically Club Rides will leave Café Roubaix at either 8.30am or 9.00am depending on the time of year. Typically, ride lengths will be at their longest during the summer and at their shortest during the winter with a café stop about halfway.
The club is affiliated to British Cycling and The Cycling Time Trial Governing Body and as such they are able to host to events under these organisations’ umbrellas.

All you need is yourself, your bike and helmet, a drink and some refreshment. The club offers the chance to meet and ride with like-minded people and develop new friendships with a wide variety of people who make up the club.
The club provides you with a downloadable route map, provides directions on the day and gives you help and support — whether it’s how to sustain your ride, tackle those hills or in event of a problem ensure you have help and support to continue your ride. Under 16s must be accompanied by an appropriate adult.

If you have any questions then please contact the club via Facebook or email Retford.Wheelers@yahoo.com.
