What’s on at Idle Valley Nature Reserve

To get wildlife lovers through the winter, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has put together a packed programme of opportunities for people to learn about and enjoy the county’s wildlife. All these events take place at the Idle Valley Nature Reserve in Retford and are open to the public:

  • Friday 1st December
    7.30pm – 10.00pm
    Stephen Moss
    Birds Britannia
    Stephen Moss is a BAFTA award-winning TV producer, naturalist and TV presenter. Best known for his work on Springwatch, Stephen also produced Big Cat Diary, Birds Britannia and Birding with Bill Oddie. Join Stephen at the Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre for an evening talk, questions and answers and book signing. During his talk he will talk about why the British are so obsessed with birds.   • Saturday 9th December
    10.00am – 3.00pm
    Winter Tree Identification
    Learn how to identify common trees in winter, without using leaves, at our Idle Valley Reserve. Includes analysis of a wide range of samples followed by a field session on the reserve.     Idle Valley Christmas Lecture — Lighting Up Nature
    Join Rick Berry from Wise Owl Environmental Education for an interactive talk on light in nature. Take part in fun experiments that show how animals see light, and how some animals can even make their own light! Suitable for children aged six and over and their families.     Smaller Than Life?

    Optics Demonstration Day with Opticron
    Your chance to try out a range of equipment, such as binoculars, under real field conditions at Idle Valley reserve. Expert advice is on hand. Contact: Attenborough Nature Centre on 0115 972 1777

    7.30pm
    Our Great British Butterflies
    Gary Hobson will talk to the Retford Local Group about his two year search for common, rare and scarce UK butterflies. The cost is £2.50. Contact: Jan Williamson on 01777 709974
  • Friday 16th February
    7.30pm to 10.30pm
    Simon Barnes – A View from a Mountain
    Simon Barnes is an author and journalist. He has written a wildlife opinion column in The Times and his outspoken, and sometimes controversial, views champion wildlife conservation in Britain and beyond. During his lecture he’ll talk about his views on conservation in the UK and discuss how species protection is of paramount importance and requires people to speak out in order to successfully conserve wildlife.     Giant Collage

Nature Trails
Pick up a form from reception at the Idle Valley reserve, follow the trail through the woods and collect the clues. Hand in your completed form for a small prize.
