Wednesday Memory Group – Ageing Well

by | 19 October 2023 | Retford, Support Group

If you’re sick to death of people banging on about diet and exercise if you want to enjoy a healthy old age, well here’s an even better idea: recent research shows that just as important as diet and exercise is having a social life!

Yes, really. The Irish LongituDinal Study of Ageing (TILDA) has been running for well over 10 years and has amassed lots of data on the over 50s in Ireland. Researchers say that to stay well and enjoy later life people need good relationships, opportunities to be creative, exercise and a purpose in life.

Covid made a massive impact on people’s lives, robbing them of their relationships and taking away the confidence to rebuild them. This has been noticeable at the Wednesday Group. It’s only in September of this year that attendance has equalled pre-Covid levels.

If there is a downside to numbers picking back up, it is that, at present, they can’t take any more members. But, if you’re feeling a bit isolated and lonely, don’t despair – pick up your phone and get in touch with someone. If you haven’t spoken to them in a while, try: “I was thinking of you the other day and wondering how you are.” More often than not, you will get a very positive response!

If you care for someone with dementia or you yourself have a diagnosis and you think the Wednesday Group might be helpful, do get in touch. For more information, contact Jan on 01777 709974 or 07969 180067 or email janwilliamson133@gmail.com for the latest on what the group is doing and current availability. They are having to operate a waiting list at present, but it may not be for long. Although they make a charge to cover costs, your first visit is free.
