Continuing our new season of third Sunday of the month rides, Sustrans Bassetlaw Rangers’ next outing will be on 21st May, starting at 10.00am from the Café Roubaix, at 38 Bridgegate in Retford. Heading out via Eaton, we’ll drop down into the Trent valley, taking minor roads and lanes to Rampton and follow the Torksey Ferry Road byway to reach the impressive Torksey viaduct, reopened as a footway in April 2016.
Crossing over into Lincolnshire, we’ll continue via Saxilby to Doddington Hall for our lunch stop. There’s a restaurant and farm shop, together with a Giant bike shop and café. Our return will be via Harby to join National Cycle Route 647, which we’ll follow west over the equally imposing Fledborough viaduct back into Nottinghamshire. Quiet lanes through Darlton and East Drayton will bring us onto our outward route at Upton to reach Retford.
This ride has a mix of minor roads, byways, bridleways and trails, so a hybrid or mountain bike would be most suitable. The distance is around 37 miles.
Make a note too of our following ride, on 4th June, starting from Retford again for our annual visit to Fledborough village for a charity barbeque lunch; more details next month.
A similar programme of rides is being run from Newark on the first Sunday of each month, the next being to Collingham and Stapleford Woods on 7th May.
