Village Ventures takes an exciting turn on Sunday 25th November, when there is an intimate one-woman show about a 1930s socialite, Lady Pamela Moore, recruited by MI5 to keep notes on Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII, suspected to be colluding with the German Embassy. But Pamela suddenly realises that what began as an adventure, has led to a deadly struggle for power in a world in the shadow of war. Solidly rooted in the style of the times, it’s an amusing film noir spy thriller exploring the abdication crisis and rise of fascism of the period.
There are satisfying production values too, with an impressive soundscape which includes film noir music as well as 1930s jazz and swing, an art deco style set and a leading lady with glamorous period wardrobe — ‘mid-calf, navy blue day dress with pearl buttons by Victor Stiebel, dove-grey tweed jacket and fox stole by House of Hartnell, hat by Elsa Schiaparelli. Perfect for luncheons, jaunts around town and spying on fascists.’
The draw of this show is the fascination with this period of history as well as its glamour. The character of Lady Pamela herself is witty, sharp tongued and great fun and makes the show very funny and entertaining as well as intriguing and dealing with an important historical period.
