Singing for fun on Heritage Open Day in Retford

by | 23 August 2017 | Community Event, Music, Retford

Retford Community Singers will be helping to celebrate three well-loved buildings in the town during the morning of 9th September. It will be an opportunity for anyone to come along to one or more mini-workshops, to have a go at singing along with regular choir members and see how quickly we can achieve a great sound. Each session is free and will last around 15 minutes and is aimed at anyone who simply likes a good tune. No booking is required. We will also be joined by children from St Joseph’s Catholic School Choir to show that singing is for any age and previous experience is no barrier, so do come along and try it out, or just listen if you prefer, all purely for fun. The sessions will take place at the Denman Library, St Swithun’s Church and Retford Museum — precise timings will be published nearer the day along with all the other heritage events.

If you’ve ever thought about joining a choir, we particularly welcome newcomers in September, whether you are an experienced singer or a complete beginner — or even if you think you can’t sing. We are a large friendly choir of men and women who love to sing all kinds of music in harmony, generally unaccompanied and always uplifting. We sing mainly for pleasure, with occasional optional events out in the community. There are no auditions or solos and you will be well supported by regular members — people keep coming back every week for the enjoyable challenge of singing songs from all sorts of traditions, including folk, pop, world music and sometimes songs especially composed by our talented Musical Director, Janet Wood. We do not use written music scores as everything is taught by ear, so we are accessible to anyone, whatever their previous knowledge. The choir includes a strong male section as well as the full range of female voices. Our regular weekly sessions always include some new material and songs in our current repertoire, making it easy for new singers to participate.

Sessions are held every Tuesday (in term time), from 7.30pm to 9.15pm, at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Babworth Road, Retford DN22 7BP. The new term begins on Tuesday 5th September and the cost is £3 per session — no need to book, just turn up any Tuesday. For further information see or call 01777 704038 or 01777 704154.
