Tickets are now available for a ‘Pie and Peas Supper’ at Headon Village Hall on Saturday 30th September in support of Retford Girlguiding Young Leader Laura Smith. The evening will include entertainment from the band SteelGen alongside a quiz, a raffle and food provided by A W Bacon and Sons. Tickets cost £6.50 for adults and £3.25 for under 12s and are available from Jane Cozens on 01777 700983 or 07813 530555 or email

Laura has been selected by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire to represent our country at an International Girlguiding camp in The Netherlands in August 2018 and now must fundraise the cost of the camp and travel fees which is approximately £1,200.

The camp will last over two weeks and as part of the trip Laura will be given the chance to take part in incredible activities, meet both Girlguiding and Scouting members from across the world and get involved with community action based projects in the local communities in The Netherlands.

“As part of this trip I hope to fulfil my Girlguiding experience and make new friends from across the world as well as in my own country,” Laura said.

“This amazing opportunity will enable me to build my confidence and help me to gain so many important life skills. But most importantly I am eager to come back to use my new skills to support young people in the Retford community and to be a role model for them to aspire to. On my return, I hope to encourage other young people to take a more positive and active role in our community, supporting each other and using the concepts and knowledge I will gain from the social action projects on my trip.

“Some amazing people have given their time and enthusiasm to offer me new experiences, challenges and skills. I now want to give other young women and girls in my local community and in those around the world the same opportunities I’ve had.”

Laura has been a member of Girlguiding in the Retford community for over 11 years, as a Rainbow, Brownie, Guide, Senior Section member and now as a Young Leader with 1st Ordsall Brownies. She is also a student at Tuxford Academy and is looking forward to starting A-Levels in September.

Laura added: “I will be working hard over the next year to raise the money required to fund the trip. If you would be able to lend any support in helping me reach this goal please visit my Facebook ‘Lauras Fundraising’ page or follow my progress on”
