The new Retford Mayor, Councillor Helen Richards, has started what she hopes will become a new tradition for Retford: a regular “Meet the Mayor” opportunity to be held every third Saturday of the month between 10.00am and 11.00am. The first of these was held on Saturday 15th July and the next two will be on 16th September and 21st October — they are the same Saturdays as Retford Farmers’ Market.
These offer informal opportunities to local people — and visitors too — to talk with the Mayor along with some of the Retford Charter Trustees about the work they do in upholding the traditions of this ancient borough. In addition, she is keen to find out what local people want for their town; she hopes to be able to help shape its future as well as protect its past.
These regular informal gatherings will coincide with the Farmers’ Market — itself a tradition going back to the granting of a second Royal Charter in 1275 — so this is an appropriate way of opening up the workings of the town’s Charter Trustees to the public.
The “Meet the Mayor” events will take place in front of the Town Hall — under a covered canopy in the event of rain — and she hopes that many locals and visitors will join her for an informal meeting and a friendly conversation.
