From Saturday 11th November to Saturday 23rd December, Cath Ray Gallery and Studios (58b Bridgegate, Retford DN22 7UZ) presents a photography exhibition entitled AL_ONE by Nicola Davison Reed.
AL_ONE deals with the themes of aloneness, resilience, love, death, and rising from adversity. With her dark, richly-detailed black and white photographs, Nicola takes us on an exploration through the vulnerable and the valuable avenues of the hu / woman condition with her wellbeing tool, the camera. Nicola uses several different cameras in her work: two Canons, a Fuji, a film camera, and her phone camera for sketching.
Nicola is a professional photographer with a natural-light studio on Eldon Street in Tuxford, where she specialises in family portraiture. When her professional assignments are done, Nicola uses her studio (with its homemade backdrops, items scored from the local charity shop, and objects chanced upon lying around) to create atmospheric scenes and still lives in photographic experiments that broaden her knowledge and test the limits of what is possible.
With this conceptual work and her ongoing street photography project, Nicola has amassed a huge body of work, which can be seen on her Instagram account @nicoladavisonreed. These specially selected pieces, seen together in this solo exhibition, make for a rare chance to fully immerse oneself in Nicola’s world of dark and light.
“Photography is my best friend; my third child; my lover; my therapist; my soul mate; my class A; my habit; obsession; and ultimately photography is my confidante,” Nicola said.
The gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 10.00am to 5.00pm (2.00pm on Tuesdays).
